I was checking my valve clearances on my KLX 300 today and the inlet vales were very tight - they require the thinnest shil to get them back in tolerance. I have stripped the head off to try and find out why - any advice on why this happens on a low mileage bike that has had regular oil changes ? any advice on what I should be looking for noe that it is stripped down ?
I was concerned as to why the valve had dropped into the head thereby requiring the thinnest shim to bring the clearance back into tolerance. I have now stripped the valves out and the problem is that the inlet valves are very worn. Someone suggested this might be because I have been running on regular unleaded fuel instead of super unleaded - anyone any experience of problems like this ?
The KLX 250 & 300 engines have always had valve recession problems when using the OEM valves. Changing to aftermarket stainless steel valves like those made by Kibblewhite is the only long term fix.
