I have a 1988 YZ250. I just bought it from my buddy who has never changed the oil. He had it for about 3 months and rode it maybe 5 hours. But i need to change the oil and was wondering what kind i put in it. The side of the engine says "Oil 750 cm3" what is that? Also i have no stick to tell me how much to put in so how much do i need?

Thanks Rocker Shocker

You need 750 cc (~3/4 of a quart) of oil. The OEM spec was likely for 10W30 or10W40 motor oil. Current 10W30 oil is generally fully of friction reducers that your clutch won't like, so 10W40 is a better choice. Other suitable fluids are 80W gear oil, ATF, or possibly thicker motor oils if you ride in hot conditions. If in doubt, go buy a bottle from your bike shop, they will ensure that you use an appropriate oil.

On your bike there should be on oil overfill hole (although your make and model may not have one at all) it's right there by your kickstarter and your oil fill hole. It's a screw with a little copper washer on it. Take that screw off and fill till oil comes out of the little hole and presto your full

750 cubic centimeters (cm3) = .79 quart. Dosen't sound like much!!!

750cc=750mL, which is standard for 2 stroke 250 gearboxes. 125's use less ~600mL. All this oil does is lube the transmission and clutch, not the rest of the engine like in most 4 stroke bikes.
