Whats a good KTM for me?

230lbs , age 23, not athletic, michigan trails only but hoping to hit everything we have to offer.

heres what i have found near me

2000 KTM 200 exc. Good condition. Runs great. Many aftermarket guards. Gnarly FMF exhaust. STREET LEGAL TITLE so there will be no hassels trying to get a plate on the bike. new chain and sprokets late last year. $2000 obo possible trade for kx250, sx250, rm250, yz250, 300exc

1999 KTM 200cc EXC, Michigan Title, New FMF Pipe, New Plastic, Runs Great, 1700

1996 KTM 250exc - $900
1996 ktm 250exc, I have Pants boots and a helmet to go along with this bike. It had complete lower and upper engine rebuild last year has only been to the dunes 1 time on the motor. I have a paddle tire and regular dirt tire both mounted on different rims, for easy change out. This bike does need a set of back break pads and a clutch lever......plastic isnt cracked but is faded.

The 2000 200exc sounds nice. Any of the bigger bikes may be a bit of a handfull for a beginner. The newer the better.

honestly the 300exc sounds like the best deal. it may be much at first but it's rideable and as long as you dont do anything stupid you'll be fine

i mean 200, id try to stay away from anything older than a 2000 because of the suspension is a universal not upside down fork

to bad you dont live closer to me, my 2000 KTM 300exc is up for sale now since I bought a 3rd bike. $2k Its ready for track or trails the way its set up now

Not that they are bad bikes - but I would stay away from the pre 99s - suspension etc. changed significantly. The older ones are heavier etc. The 300s and 380s, can be a handful for a newbie to.

If I were choosing, assuming comparable condition - I would do the 2000 200 or the 1999 200 - if the 99 was clearly better condition, I would be Ok with that to. Motorwise either of those are about the same, suspension differences otherwise.

I know you have been asking about KDXs as well. I have both a 2003 KTM 200 and a 1999 KDX 200 in the garage (my kid's bikes). Stone stock, the KTM is much more of a bike than the KDX - motor and suspension wise - again, not that the KDX is bad, just the KTM is better. The KDX now has a FMF pipe (fatty) and silencer, fresh rebuild, heavier rate springs, tall seat and bar risers - feels dramatically closer to the KTM - though it still falls short somewhat. Having said that, the KDX might be a tad easier for a newbie to adapt to - and later on you could do some mods to add some performance.

The KTM200 responds very well to some minor easy to do tweeking as well - adjust the powervalve to the "Langston Setting" (go to KTMtalk.com for more info on that), add a flywheel weight and or a G2 throttle cam - sweeet bike for woods use, very manageable power, and ample easy to use power. I love riding my son's 200 - its a blast to ride (though I still prefer my 250). With the mods, I enjoy my other son's KDX as well - way more so than when it was stock.

For a total newbie, that I thought might be easily intimidated and not likely to want to move up - I would go KDX. For someone I thought might be more likely to become an agressive rider - I would go with the KTM, and at least do the G2 throttle cam to start with. Or for a future agressive rider, start with the KDX and modify it as your skills develop.

Niether are a bad choice - go with what is in good condition, readily available and in your price range.
