Its time to get the wife a new bike. Just sold her TTR125L. She wants something bigger with more power. She is a decent rider and has rode my CRF250X a couple times pretty well. She dumped it a few times but was able to pick it up and keep going. She has never ridden a two stroke so I am torn between getting her a 2T 125 or a CRF230. She is 5'8 150 what do you guys think???

You're going from one extreme to the other (230 4t playbike vs 125 2t mx bike)!!

Def do not get the 230 - they're way heavy , kinda slow and the suspension is awful. If she outgrew the TTR, she won't like the 230. Are you going to ride trails? a 125 2t might not be a good choice. Look into the KTM's - they're light and powerful (but they're not cheap). If she doesn't like the bursty power of the 2t, you could always install a flywheel weight (I did). Good luck!!

p.s. I'm 5'8 and 145 and the 200 xc-w fits me perfect. :ride:

The CRF230 is a great bike. But most people can not ride worth a poo. I friend of mine has a CRF230 and another a CRF250X. The CRF230 gose the same places the 250 goes and then some. I can ride 30 to 50 foot gaps and the suspension is fine. Only down side to the 230 is the weight. A KX100 or CRF150R might be your best bet.

If she enjoyed your CRF250X, why not get her one of those?

Only down side to the 230 is the weight.

The lack of HP,
The fact that it doesn't handle remotely as well as a 250X
The weak, not-worth-upgrading suspension...
Shall we continue?

While both are great bikes FOR THEIR INTENDED purposes, making that comparo is like saying your gramp's Olds 88 can run Indy cause he's a good driver.

The 230 has reliability and frendly power. It dose what it was made for great. It is not the bike that makes you good but how good you ride it. Most people cant ride there bikes to there full potnshial anyway. Eaither way one of those bikes would be good.

Agree

The 230 is like lugging around a cow or something. Okay well that's not a good description, but I would def. go with the 250X. For the same statements Okie stated.

There is no girl/woman I know of (trail/woods rider) that has been fond of 2-stroke power.... especially the on/off power of a 125! A lowered WR250 is a huge favorite.

I've ridden a 125 2T in the woods for 7yrs. I know quite a few girls/women who ride 125/250 2Ts in the woods.

coal cracker,

Sounds like your wife is ready for a full sized bike. If she rode a 250F and enjoyed it, a trail bike will be too heavy and underpowered for her taste. My girlfriend rode my CRF250R with no problem, she was riding an XR100 before that. She felt more comfortable on the bigger bike because, as she sayes, "it had more room".

The Kx125 and RM 125's seem to have a bit more low end than the other 125's. KTM's are always good, 125 and 200. Don't forget the new 144. Any 250F would be great too. The used market is flooded with inexpensive choices. You can rebuild a stock HONDA head for less than $400 from Service honda. Don't fear worn valves.

Good luck, Steve

I think it all depends on the woman's age and personality. I just bought my first 2t and I can see it's going to take some getting used to, but I'm looking forward to the challenge (although I cheated a little by changing the flywheel weight) :)

Only bad of the 144 is that it is not allowed to race. But seeing how she most likly wont race then it would be fine.

It's legal in the women's classes.

A good used ktm 200exc would make a great bike, great bottom end , also will scream like a 125 and about the same weight as a 125. I had a 2001 kdx 200 and loved it, but the ktm 200 exc my riding buddy has does everything better and is a little smaller and seems to weigh a lot less.
Best bet is to try out a few bikes and let her pick what she wants. Life will be easier in the long run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gonna go with a used 125. I think she will be fine on it. We reide mainly desert so she won't be riding anything very technical. She likes a challenge and she only goes out once or twice a month. I just got a job out in Cali so we are both gonna get 2002 or older smokers. Thanks for the help everyone. Either CRs or YZs.
