Wow did this week take a lot of steam out of my sails. Monday I had the day off, decided to sleep in and hit the deer stand after day break. Boss calls, "Matt you picked the wrong day to sleep in. Oh by the way, I need some help hauling my seven pointer out of the woods." So I spend the morning helping him. Good thing is when we dropped off his deer at the butcher, my six pointer was ready, 67lbs of venison in the freezer :thumb:
Tuesday I hit the gym and go to work, seems like the post commander ate some high ranking A$$ for breakfast, now their problems become mine So the day starts with a statement; "Matt this is gonna suck" and a question; "So where do you want it, head or gut?" I spend all week long digging through medical records and working on medical issues that should have been squared away months and in some cases years ago! Meanwhile two of my best folks are out for deaths in the family (our thoughts are with you guys).
End result, Thursday comes and goes with as much fun as suffering through the morning after eating 50 jalopeno (sp?) poppers and drinking too many draft beers from a bowling ally.
Friday hit like the calm before the storm. The morning was calm and cool, not a breath of air stirred as I made my way across post to brief the heavy brass on the status of these folks trying to figure out a good way to tell these guys that although I've only been in the job for three months, it looks like my predecessor and theirs didn't do their jobs. Needless to say that went over like this guy :flame: in a punch bowl! However, since I'm not under their command, they nibbled on my rear, can't say the same for the dude who was sitting next to me. He owned the folks in question. That was danger close. Now before you get the wrong picture here, I did brief up the subordinate commanders prior to this, so we all knew it was coming and put a plan in place to fix it. However, this dude took that chewing like a man! So off we went glad that it was Friday. Now since I didn't have a prayer of getting off early enough to grab the Green Mistress and make for the woods like a scalded dog, I planned on taking out my buddy's GSXR 750. He's away on one of the Army's better "business trips" and left his bike in my garage for storage and told me to "keep it warm for him". So, lunch comes and goes with more issues and problems developing...I'd love to wring the neck of the dude that talked me out of the infantry assignments and put me in hospital administration! (SARGE ARE YOU OUT THERE?! I NEED A GOOD NCOIC ASAP!!!!!!!) I digress... Finally I'm climbing into the truck to leave work and my wife pulls up with the boy. Evidently he's had a temp. and been fussy. I head back into the hospital, pull some favors and manage to keep the peds clinic open for us. Long and short of that one, is that the boys fine, just a bit dehydrated. So off we go heading for home finally. We get home and put the little guy to bed, settle down in front of the tube with a frosty one and call it a day. Saturday. The lab and the boarder collie decide that 0600 is an acceptable time to chase the cat around the house and drop raw-hide bones down the wooden stairs. I'm not sure if it was the cat-dog race around the house or the klunk, klunk, klunk of the raw-hides going down the stairs that woke up the little guy. I get the proverbial "it's your turn" elbow in the ribs. I'm up and soon the boy is back down and dreaming of the beautiful things that young boys and lab puppies do. That little guys giggle can erase every bit of stress I feel, if I could can that and take it to work with me... Bear with me folks I'm almost done here. So, I up and without much to do since I'm not going to hunt today and the hunting shows aren't on the tube yet. I decide it's a good time to take out the Gix'er, grab a cup of coffee and bring home some doughnuts. Not too much later I'm on my way back home from the doughnut shop zippin along the back country roads really enjoying the whine of my buddies yosh. pipe when this car pulls up behind me. Now I'm doing about 50 in a 45 and this dude rolls up behind me like I was parked. So, first I check the rearview to see if it's a cop. The car looked like a maroon toyota camery. So I roll on the throttle. I pull out of the twisties and am on a three or four mile straight away (adjacent to a prison, are you seeing where I'm going with this?), I'm tucked down behind this postage stamp sized windshield and glancing down realize that I'm doing like 90 miles an hour, now I'm thinking, "funny it doesn't feel like 90". Well I start dropping gears like enron stock and slow down to a respectable 50 for a good corner and then creep back up to about 70 for the last straight away before a stop sign. I'm sitting at the sign and am just about to make my left turn for the house when the "maroon Toyota Camery" pulls up next to me. The window goes down and I realize that the "maroon Toyota Camery" is really an unmarked maroon Chevy Malibu! I push up the visor and the statie says "Nice bike, how fast will it go?" I'm thinking "Oh Crap". I answered honestly with, "Faster than I'd ever want to go". The trooper laughed and said he had a Harley and told me to keep it under a 100 and to "have a nice day". I got home and was pondering this over some coffee. I guess what I take away from this week and today is this.
No matter how bad, hectic and fast paced work is going. Or how stressed out I get. I should try to "keep it under a 100" and enjoy the little things in life like a snuggling wife on a cool morning. The sing song tinkle of a young boys laugh. The warm hum of a tuned motor. And the smell of a tired wet chocolate lab snoring at my feet.
Thanks for letting me vent guys and try to "keep it under a 100" :thumb:
(sorry about the edit, I forgot to do a spell check earlier)

Don't worry Irish, I'd never take the cowards way out.
Hi Tony! You bet. It has to be rough on the police out there. Having a job where 90% of your interactions with "John Q Public" are negative has to wear on you.

je-eeze! cap'n, not one profanity or FTA in that whole rant? you must be getting the kid gloves treatment out on the coast. yeh, screw the 9-5, 5 days a week with a somewhat reasoned schedual that you can build a life around, get that good ole infantry madness to make it all better.if ya aint getting shot at chances are you're either cold, hot, wet, too dry and tired. beans to that, i'm thinking about looking for some "work" from some old "friends"...the wife wants me to be an NCOIC teaching INF tactics at the puzzle palace academy, but there's still some rumors of a small outfit that will allow an old man to hurt himself on a regular bassis. ahh, who knows, my lil' vac is about up...maybe i'll just go run a hot poker up my sphinchster and have the wife spray me down with the well water out back at 0400 when it's about 40 deg, yeh, that might do it. btw, head over to the senior NCO club , tell 'em an old fat man sent ya to pick up an M1A1 rubber butt, makes them chewing that much easier. :thumb:

Sarge, I'm sure there was plenty going on while he finally figured out the scope of the "Blue Falcon" he had received from his predecessors :) :) :thumb:

Roger that Sarge! Man what a week. This one didn't start out too much better. I'm begining to figure out that this dam^ed branch is made up of 20% "Studs" and 80% "Duds". The studs are constantly carrying the duds. Back in division and in the teams we carried our individual weight, if someone fell out, he'd better have fallen behind for a good reason. At that point we'd spread out his load and ensure he made the distance. Then we'd hound his sorry a$$ until he made the next problem. Here it's like there are a few that keep this place running and have to answer the hard questions, the rest are staying fat, dumb and happy. Man oh man send me back to a place where you have to haul your own weight and you're held accountable! Last night I had SDO, nothing major, just man the desk and rattle the doors. Well, when I turned over the duty to the runner in the morning, I went off to work like usual and managed to get a whole lot of work done. I was begining to wonder just how I was getting so much done and wasn't being bothered when the commander passed my door and wanted to know why I was still at work!? I guess he has a policy that states that after the good ole' SDO all officers go home, but the EM's and the NCO's are at the mercy of their sections. I told him "'cause my guys are here Sir". This seemed to stump the old man. Meanwhile my boss the LTC was behind him nodding his head and trying not to laugh at the fact that this seemed to be a foreign concept to the old man. I like my boss he's pretty down to earth and grew up in IN land. I rib him pretty hard for riding an XR200, I keep asking him when he's going to trade in the girls bike. He takes it well, then I do push ups. Life is good when your boss is one of the "studs". Just gotta keep the chin up Sarge. Even though this isn't the "dream job" it allows me to spend time with the family, hunt and court the "green mistress". Plus the boss rides!! :thumb:

Listen up slick, I may not be rating your NCOER but if I have to help out on another hill I may have to put a few choice words in the "Comments" block... :p :)

PSST IRISH: You don't "rate" an NCOER. You rate the NCO. The comment you'd have to insert is;

"Rater doesn't meet minimum EXPERIENCE or time to rate this NCO" However, if you're the senior rater you have to address three things; Performance, Potential and Promotion. So let's see if we can do an adhock on the good Sarge.
PERFORMANCE: Sarge performes well under pressure, excells in one man wars against hornets and little tin men.
POTENTIAL: Sare has Unlimited Potential to erode the confidence and speed of both skilled and unskilled riders alike.
PROMOTION: PROMOTE NOW! Send Sarge to first school available and assign to positions of greater responsibility.
NEXT THREE POSITIONS:
DRN Seargent At Arms
Ambassador to Iraq
Next DRN Mod. for all Things "P.C." :thumb:
