I have an XR200 '02 but I'm looking for something bigger just for trail riding (not racing). I saw an XR 250 for sale, its '89 but just 1 owner who always took a great care of the bike. Which one would work better for what I need? Or which one will any of you get (forgetting the price)? The old XR 250 '89 or the new XR 200 '02?

Thanks.

A lot depends upon the condition of both. If the XR 250 is worn out, and the 200 is like new, the 200 would be the better bike. But if the 250 is in decent shape it will be better than the newer 200.

The 89 XR 250 had about 2" more suspension travel front and rear, more adjustability of the suspension, and is physically a larger bike than the 200 which was downsized to be a smaller bike in 1993.

The 250 will have more power (50cc more displacement, bigger carb, 4 valve head, versus small carb and 2 valve head).

The 250 also has a front disc brake, versus the 200's drums at both ends.

The only issue here is that the '89 250 is 13 years older, and potentially more worn out. You may be looking at some repairs and updates to bring it back to where the '02 200 is already at. If it was only between these 2 bikes, unless the 250 was a rat, I would have to say I would personally pick it over the XR 200, despite the age difference between the bikes. The 250 might be older, but it is a more modern design in terms of performance and components.

If I wasn't restricted to these 2 bikes only, I would look at something newer than the 89 XR 250, with a more modern, higher performance design than the XR 200.

Thanks for the replys. That '89 just has one owner who didn't used it that much and maintaned it well. The bike its like new even that its 13 years older than the XR 200, thats why I'm considering it.
