I am about 230lbs and 5'9'', i currently have a '90 kdx 200 but want to go to four stroke. I was thinking xr 250 or xr 400. I want a realiable bike for tight trails, mud, and fire roads. im looking to spend about $1200 to $2000 and id apreiciate some opinoions on this one. what year and condition could i get for under 2k? disc brakes and lights are definatly important for me. how fast could an xr 250 and 400 go? top speed isint too important to me, though. ive had xr's before and i love them. what year did they start making the 400?
whatever you got would be aprpeciated.
thanks,

Hey,
They started making the 400's in '96. At your size, I would highly recommend a 400 over a 250. Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that you find a 400 under $2k, unless it is in very poor condition. On the other hand, you should have no problem getting an older 250 for that price. I would guess that your KDX is as fast, or faster than an XR250. So, it would not be much of an upgrade. Check out cycletrader.com. Good luck.

I'm 5'9" and 155lbs and just started riding an xr500r. Front disc and lights. Same basic dependable air cooled engine they still use. It'll throw mud at 75 mph and it is geared slow enough for tight trails. The weight difference between the older xr250, xr400, and xr600 is very small so why not grab for the most available power? ALso, consider you can get get a much nicer xr600 for your money than an xr400 just because of the relative popularity of the 600 and the fact that they've been making them for so long.

More power+less money+trail/road riding+a heavy dude=big block XR in my opinion.

My low weight has no problem starting this thing.

You would find that an xr250 would feel incredible much slower than your KDX, at least anthing with a little age to it. There is just no comparison between 2 and 4 strokes of the same size. I'm a diehard forestroker, but more cubies are needed for lots of ponies with a 4 stroke. But if you like nice ridable power, with lots of torque, the 250r is a good bike.

You cannot compare a 600 to a 400 or 250. In 1996 the XR250 frame and suspension were completely redesigned and are far superior to the previous models. The XR400 was also built to similar specs with considerably more power and a little more weight than the 250. The XR600 remained mostly unchanged from 91 to 99. It is far heavier, has way more power and also is much slower handling. This is due mostly to the longer wheelbase and trail figures. I had the 600s and rode the 400s and 250s. If you are on the big side go with the 400. The 250 or 400 if you are smaller. The 600 is just a whole different category.
