Xr600 Counter Shaft - split the case?

I just stripped the counter shaft teeth on my '86 XR600. I believe this is called the countershaft - it's the shaft that the front sprocket goes on (not the sprocket itself).

The teeth are completely gone.

Does replacing the countershaft require splitting the case?

Yes, it would require you to split the case. I have seen someome weld a sprocket on a XR 200. It might not hold up too wel with a 600. It could olso make the oil seal leak.

do it right split em when you do get them apart have a big rubber band on standby to hole in all your gearing.
If you need to take out ANY gearing get a egg carton and place them in the carton in the order that they were removed<-------yea thats the tip for the day
