Three guys I know of have had their stators malfunction on '08 - '09's. All three are those that have removed their lights... those still running their lights haven't had any issues.
I'm no electrical guru, but could this common link (light removal) be at all valid? A local AA HS racer thinks so after going through a couple stators, he now mounts a working bulb inside the airbox... no trouble since. Others seem to think it's an aluminum-frame-grounding issue.
