We have a wasp here in Cali that is known by the slang name of 'Tarantula Hawk' because they will sting a Tarantula, which doesn't kill it but paralyses it, then lay their eggs on it to feed on the Tarantula. Picture a fuzzy reddish orange wasp about the same size as the fuzzy spider she hunts!

Then there's those Japanese beetles, about 2" long, metallic green, and they sound like an Apache helicopter when they're buzzing by your head. Harmless, but they still scare the p00p outta me!

Those potato bugs are scary looking, but the California 'bug' that bothers me the most is the black widow spider.  You see a lot more of them than potato bugs, too.

Of course our Aussie mates could tell us a thing or three about spiders!

The brown recluse is some serious stuff, but don't sluff off Black Widows so easily either. I was bit by a BW once and it was no picnic!

People have different reactions to each type of bite also. Though either can kill you you can also be pretty much unscathed from either of these spiders.
