I work at a four stroke performance shop - we see literally hundreds of these every year. They are a reliable engine, for a motocross bike. But they are NOT designed to be as reliable as an enduro model, such as an XR400. Many people have been lucky with the YZF's, which shows how well Yamaha built them, but they DO require regular rebuilds to stay healthy. What many ex-two-stroke riders don't realize is that the design of a four stroke allows it to run with MANY damaged parts. Look at it this way - a four stroke will run with the following: Stretched timing chain, worn cam/rockers, mushroomed valves, broken piston rings, scored/seized piston, worn rod. A two stroke will typically not run even after a seizure. This is good from a maintenance standpoint, because you are forced to deal with small problems before they become large. A four stroke has a tendency to run forever even critically wounded. If you purchase a poorly maintained, well thrashed four stroke (say, if Dead ENG Start was selling his :p), Murphy's law says it won't break until you the second owner gets it home. Want corroboration for my statements? Grab your Yamaha YZF manual - go to the recommended replacement timetable. Now look at the same data for an XR 400. How often does Yamaha recommend replacement of the piston and rings? What about Honda? Nuff said. All I'm saying is buyer beware. Don't expect these bikes to last as long as an XR if they are ill-treated. It's a thoroughbred, and needs to be treated as such.
