Classic Dirt Bikes “1977 AW 400 Maico”

This video features Scottish Twinshock rider Richie McFadden’s 1977 AW (Adolf Weil) 400 Maico. Richie from Dunoon on the west coast of Scotland personalised this bike by having the wheels powder coated in bright yellow. Richie also won the Pre 77 championship on this bike in 2014 and 2015.

Other than the nearly one minute long intro that’s dripping cheese, these are some great vintage motocross bike videos. A lot of twin-shock & classic MX iron here!

  • Point / magneto ignition? I had one of these for years, The points were external, not under the flywheel, so I mounted another set of points from a Honda. The second set opened reverse and faced the original points which operated off the crankshaft cam lobe. One set of points opened almost at TDC and the second had the proper advance. A single throw, double pole toggle switch allowed switching from one set to the other. Since most my riding was trail riding this make-shift ordeal combined with the standard cylinder wall compression release really eased engine starting.
