Red Bull KTM Rally Factory Racing rider Sam Sunderland has claimed victory on stage one of the 2017 Desafio Ruta 40. With the conditions suiting the British rider, Sunderland rode a fast and error-free timed special stage to take the win by three minutes and 22 seconds. Matthias Walkner put in a strong performance to place seventh, the Austrian playing catch up after his penalty from the Prologue. Team newcomer, Luciano Benavides gained more valuable rally experience and finished 12th but unfortunately a crash later in the stage has brought a premature end to his rally.Following on from yesterday’s second place in the opening Prologue, Sam Sunderland went one better to claim victory on a tough 322km special stage one. The KTM 450 RALLY mounted rider was the 14th to set off this morning, which gave him the perfect opportunity to chase down the leading riders. With tracks to follow, good navigation and incredible speed on the difficult terrain, Sunderland showed why he is the leading rider in the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship.
