02 400sx,exc or 03 450sx

I am looking for opinions on these bikes for a begining rider.I'm 6'4 240lbs dry weight...I have only ridden 4 wheelers, 4-stroke in the woods. I will be riding mostly woods with some mx, nothing serious just for fun. If I race it will be H.S.'s. What is a fair price for a new 02 400? Will the 4 spd and extra cc's be o.k. in the woods?

The 450 is not only extra ccs. It's supposedly a real MX beast as opposed to the 400sx which is a mellow bike. Just an opinion, but if you can get a good deal on a 02, get one. The 400 will pull your weight around just fine.

I am 6'4" and 265# on a good day and I ride an 02 400SX!
And guess what, I love it!
You will need some suspension work as it is pretty soft stock. But since you are a newbe to 2 wheels you can probably wait a while on that.
The power is nice and unintimadating for a novice rider. It makes almost perfect power for the woods.

I agree with the other 2 posters. Reportedly the new 450 SX is Quite the machine. completely different than the '03 MXC and EXC. The bore and stroke differences alone clearly identify what KTM is looking to achieve (89/72 - exc & mxc, 95/63.4 - SX). The '02 400 EXC & MXC is mellower than the SX, but not by a whole lot. I really like my '02 400SX. Although, I will be kitting it with Eric Gorr's 450 kit soon. Also the '02 SX & the '03's have different forks than the '02 exc. I won't elaborate any further on that topic.

My local dealer has one for 5400. I am in the process of getting quotes on bikes and shipping. The guys I'll be riding with have blue and white bikes 02 yz426f,wr426,yz250. Maybe I'll get good enough to make them chase my pumpkin!!! thanks again.
