i might be getting a 04 crf250, and was wondering if there is anything i should look at closely on it, also i have heard that the pistons on the 04 are bad should i get a new one, if so what brand, also should i replace valves or anything

There is an article here in the Forward Motion section that appears in Dirt rider Mag. It will answer alot of questions.

The CRF250R is a Race Bike. It is a high revving machine like a 125 2 stroke with more moving parts. The 4 stroke piston has a small skirt. It wears fast 20 hours of hard use. Our 125 ate pistons almost as fast. The valves need to be checked alot and shimmed, once they wear, you replace them. It could take week's. months. days for this to happen. Too many factors apply.

We have one that was raced last year for around 500 miles plus trail rides, 2 pistons and a set of valves replaced. So that is not bad IMO
