It's a decent bike, but the 250 is not a real power house. They handle pretty well, suspension is fine for dual sport and moderate trail speeds.
If you intend to do lots of riding at 50+ mph or any riding with a passenger, you might hold out for something with a bigger motor.
FWIW, my buddy converted a KLX300 (pretty much the same bike as the 250 with 50 more cc) into a dual sport, and it worked pretty well. He later punched it out to 331cc with higher compression, and that made it even more fun.
