2 stroke back-fire

I have a 2002 KTM 300 that has had this problem since new. Recently, after reading posts on another board I tried leaning my pilot-jet. I dropped to a 42 from a 45 and set the airscrew at one-half to three quarters of a turn out. This has virtually eliminated the problem. Previous to this I had tried going as much as two sizes richer on the pilot-jet, but this just induced a very rich condition at low throttle positions and still had the knocking.
