Accoring to my calculator, 13/49 will give perhaps 2 to 3 more mph than 13/51 sprockets. The flywheel weight shouldn't have any effect on top speed. Not sure about the pipe. Which model gnarly is it?

I currently run a 12/46 setup which I find to be ideal. I have also used 13/48 which wasn't too bad so long as the hills weren't TOO steep...gave a real fast top end.

I run a 12/48 for tight tight woods (lets me hit 3rd a little bit) and then I switch to a 13/48 for when I am riding RR tracks, doubletrack trails or anything more siginificantly open.

The combo seems to work very well for me and has not caused any adverse chain problems that I can tell.
