These roadless areas were protected under a rule adopted in 2001, after receiving broad public support from Washingtonians. In 2005, the Bush Administration repealed the 2001 Rule and replaced it with an optional Governor’s petition and rule-making process. Governor Gregoire wants to ensure that the character of these roadless areas is protected, and is therefore petitioning the U.S. Department of Agriculture in November 2006. Before submitting this petition regarding the management of Washington’s roadless areas, the Governor is asking Washingtonians to weigh in on the issue. Please note that all comments must be received by October 13, 2006. Before submitting a comment form online or via mail, please review the following information: Washington Roadless Areas Fact Sheet 2001 Roadless Rule 2005 Roadless Rule Click on the “Documents” tab and then on the document entitled “Federal Register Final Rule and Notice; Special Areas; State Petitions for Inventoried Roadless Area Management,” dated 5/13/2006 U.S. Forest Service maps of Washington roadless areas There are three ways for the public to submit comments on how roadless areas should be protected: Use the online comment form; Download and print the comment form and mail it to: Roadless Areas Comments Governor’s Executive Policy Office PO Box 43113 Olympia, Washington 98504-3113; or Attend one of the two informal, informational workshops outlined below and submit the comment form in person at the workshop.
