Money No Object!! Best Trail Bike is.....??

Long time rider here. Vast experience with some enduro races and moto-cross races from the late 70's to the mid 80's. Now in my late 40's and just getting back into trail riding in the northeastern US.

Currently have a 2004 XR400. A bit heavy and a bitch to start but plenty of power.

What would you recomend as a near perfect trail bike? I'm 6'2" and 250 lbs. Money is not a problem.

Looking for enough power down low, relatively light weight, very good handling on trails, and of course a "happy" button would be great!

any of the current crop of woods bikes would probably fit the bill. It's all in what you like. KTM seems to be the bike of choice for woods riding up here in New England.

KTM 300 EXC is at the top of the list in my opinion...I just bought a 2007. However, if you think the XR400 has plenty of power, you may want to consider something with less zip. I recently sold my 2001 XR400 to a beginner friend, they are excellent bikes, but they are heavy and underpowered. My KDX220 will run off and leave the XR in single track. The KTM will run off and leave the KDX, so going from an XR to a 300 EXC would be a big step up in power.

The KTM 300 Would fit the bill for you and with your experience you will adapt well to the power.It will chug like a XR600 or rip your arms off like a cr 500 it lets you make the choice of how aggresive you want it to be And it has a button to start it.

Thanks for the input so far. There is a KTM dealer near by so I may pay them a visit soon.

BTW, is the KTM 300 2 or 4 stroke?

2 stroke if you have to have a 4 stroke get the 525exc

I know this is a bit late, and lord knows I'm not a huge KTM fan (at least not the one I own). But the 350XC-F seems to be a wonderful woods machine.

A KTM 300 EXC is not a bad choice at all. Depending on what kind of trails you like to do a WR 250F might be a good bike as well, not quite as much power as a XR 400 or 300 EXC but it sure does a great job on the trails!
