To go I5 you need to get to Bakersfield and then head north on I5 to Sacramento, take I80 East to Reno and you cross the Sierra's over Donner Pass. The good thing about I5/I80 is that I80 is a major trucking route and is usually kept pretty clear. From Fontana I'd take 395 if the weather & roads are good.
