Hey all,

First post and first vintage bike! I'd like to find out as much as possible about my '81 YZ465. Are there any specific forums for this bike?

Kwattro, i dont think so. But i might be able to enlighten you a bit.

The 81 YZ465 was the first year for the beast. It was an air-cooled 2 stroke, with a 5 speed gear box, CDI ingnition, 249lb dry weight, 37.4 inch seat height, 11.8 front and 12.6 rear inches of travel, dual drum brakes, retailed for $2349 new, had a VM38mm carb, borexstroke= 85mmx82mm, and thats about it.

Super fun and fast bike. It was a buga to start unless your on TDC (top dead center) and you come up and over those bars you probably wont start it. Really good vintage motocrosser. Has amazing bottom end grunt and a huge mid to top end hit.

The YZ and the Maico 490 are top of the food chain in the vintage races. The 465 Yamaha is preferable over the 490 Yamaha. Good Luck with it.

Close, but the 1980 was the 1st year, 81 was the 2nd year. 79 was a 400, 82 was the 490- that's a lot of engine growth over only 4 years.

i thought '79 was the first year?

79 was the odd year for the YZ400. Pistons are VERY tough to find as it is different than the earlier 400s and 80 Yamaha brought out the YZ465. In '82 they were still marketing a 465, but that was the IT.

Matt Fisher, i must have had a brain fart.

zoommx, yeah the 79 YZ or IT400 had the most power of all the years for it. The power difference between a 400 and a 465 is huge. Who would have thought 65CCs would have made that big of difference.

Thanks for the link. I'm trying to learn as much about this bike as possible, especially setting it up correctly for reliabilty and performance.
