I am looking at buying new 2001 rm 250. Do they have alot of problems, do you have to put in the really expensive spark plugs. Any certain things i should do as soon i pick it up. Any advice would help.

jusrt sold my 01 rm. normal stuff to change.... chain, bars, etc. jetting is way off in stock form boysen rad valve(by the way, i have a new one for sale) really wakes up throttle response. change the power valve spring to the 00 model. (it's a lighter tension).

I've had my 01 for about 7 months and have nothing but great rides on it. The stock plug was the BR8EG when I got it, no problem there.
I changed the reeds to the boysen power reeds, rejetted and put a Pro Circuit pipe and silencer. I absolutely love the bike, but I guess going from a 92 rm250 to this one would make a difference no matter what. The suspension broke in after about 4 or 5 rides and I was able to dial it in pretty good. I change the trany oil quite often because it gets a little notchy after w while. I also left the stock sprokets on and it seems to work just fine for the track and trails. Enjoy and good luck

I love mine. The only problems are the motor and forks. While elk bolted on stuff I went the porting route with Eric Gorr. It made a dramatic improvement in top and mid power and smoothed out the midrange hit. I kept everything else stock and saved a bundle of money (sorry elk ;) ) Eric’s $120 porting vs all the bolt on stuff.

The forks beat me up all the time due to some mid stroke harshness and MX Tech revalved them along with the shock. I haven’t had a chance to try the suspension yet but I expect a much smoother ride.

I really like the bike

Picked up my RM in August of last year. Put 15-20 hours on it with no problems at all. Plugs cost about $3.50. I did order new springs for the forks and shock (MX-Tech). Also, sent the cylinder off for porting (Eric Gorr). The jetting is on the rich side, I will start to work on that as soon as I get it back together. Check out the threads for '02 RM250 jetting and the slide cutting. Bought apply to the '01. I am going to make this mod as well. I am definitley happy with my 'zuki, but 'zukis are the only bikes that I buy. Good luck.

Two thumbs up!!

I rode/raced a 01 RM250 and really liked the bike after I got it dialed.

Suspension... The stock fork is sorta strange; it can be both harsh and soggy, but a revalve by Trak Control worked wonders. The stock shock is not too bad, but I had that re-done as well.

Ergos... Unless you are short, get the tall 01 RM125 (& 02 RM125/250) Ceet or Factory Effex foam. The stock 01 RM250 foam is about an inch shorter than the 01 RM125 and makes a world of difference. The stock cover will not fit the taller foam. Bars: again, unless you are short, get some bars in that 90mm height range. I ran the DeMarini YZ bars and have them for the 02 as well.

Handling... The 01/02 RM250s are trim, thin, motorcycles. Nice light feeling with razor sharp steering. The steering can be a bit too quick on a fast mototrack, but in the woods, the RM is a fantastic steering bike. If you drop the fork tubes (less sticking out the top), this sharp is decreased somewhat.

For the engine... In stock tune, the bike is very touchey about its fuel and jetting, and it doesn't turn a lot of upper revs. I installed Boyesen reeds, a Bills pipe, and a Steahly 13oz Flywheel weight. With these changes, the top end power was comparable to a 01 CR250, although the CR came on the power lower in the revs. Jetting was in the 160/48 range, #2 clip. Something else to try which worked very well at my 1200ish elevation, was the 1/2 step leaner needle at the #3 clip position. Several race buds ran race gas and remarked about the better engine performance. The V-Force reeds are a great improvement, too. One note, is that my 01 wasn't always the most consistant starter. It requires just the right amount of throttle cracking (about 1/8) for it to fire consistantly on the first kick for Hare Scrambles.

Reliability... Parts needed- Nothing but wear parts (brake pads, tweaked throttle cable, and front seat/tank plastic bumper)

Overall, it is a great bike and I would've rode mine another season, but I talked myself into an '02. Good luck with it! :)
