The time has come for me to get a scoot that was manufactured in this century  I have a few that I have been looking at locally here as well as a couple of prospects I have been hunting on the net for.

First to meet the rules I am a FOG (fat old guy) rider who will be using the bike primarily on an MX track. My concerns in this transaction are a few, the first being that the only bike I've ridden at all in the last few years is an 18 year old RM125. I'm worried that the 250 2 strokes I've been looking at are going to eat me alive. I was really considering a 250 4 stroke as the perfect bike for me (a little more than a 125 to carry my girth but not a 250 2 stroke abundance). Unfortunately the budget precludes buying new which brings me to another concern and that being buying a used 4 stroke terrifies me. I watched one of our local racers grenade the engine in his 02 a few weeks ago and he was looking at over $2500 CDN to get it fixed.

The main prospects at the moment are a few 02 RM250's, and an 01 YZ250F. Any thoughts or opinions on any of these bikes as well as on the used 4 stroke purchase concerns?

If you can exercise some self-control, I'd go with the RM in a hearbeat. They're wicked fast, IMO. Kinda twitchy though (hence the "self-control" part!). I think the 01 250F would be much riskier (sp?) in the mechanical dept., unless you can get receipts for a complete engine rebuild, 3-4 yrs on one of those is pushing the service life of some major components more than I would be comfortable with.

Dat's my $0.02 (U.S., not Canadian...) :)

i own a yz250f 01' ive owned it for about three years and have ran the crap out of it. i have never once checked the valve clearance, checked to see if they seal, or done anything but change the oil and filter. i just had surgery so right before i pulled the whole motor and i am going to check all that stuff. although nothing was wrong with my motor not pinging knocking or funny noises. and when i say i run the crap out of it mean i run the crap out of it. as long as when you look at it check to see if it was maintained well. smell the oil to see if its been changed lately. ride the bike and make sure when its cold theres no funny noises and when its warm theres no funny noises. it should start on the first or second kick when you kick it over. check the air filter to make sure its been cleaned lately. other then that you should be in pretty good luck if its a nice looking bike. good luck with that.
