04 CR250 crank seal question?

Can the crank seal on the flywheel side be changed without splitting the cases on a 04 CR250?

My friend has one that we suspect a air leak on the crank seal. It started idling very irradicly and has gotten so bad that now it idles very very fast.He pulled the plug and it was snow white.There are no obvious leaks any where.He left it running when he pulled the flywheel cover off and as he was removing the cover it idled up even more!He spayed starting fluid at flywheel while running and it changed the idle a bit but did not rev like he thought it would if it was leaking?Any one got any ideas?

Carefully drill 2 small pilot holes 180 degrees apart for a #8 drywall screw, the longer the better. Run them in a couple of threads and yank the seal out. Personally, for around 300 dollars in parts you could have a fresh engine. New seals, bearings, crank and top end. That seal went out for a reason. You have no guarantees a shaving will fall into the bearing.

That seal went out for a reason.

Seals do wear out. It does not neccesarily mean there is any other problem.

Replace the seal from the outside you do not need to split the cases.

Easy fix. Some people replace the seals annualy just to prevent problems with them during a race.
