I'm 22, 6'3 and 210 pounds, I rode consistently about 7 years ago on a kx100 when i was much smaller. I will be riding mostly trails and some practice days at the track. I want a mx'er but don't know what to get. My budget is around 4k. I went to a local kawi, honda dealer and asked him this same question and he wanted to sell me a 250f, personally I love 2 strokes, thats what I always have ridden, and is the reason im getting back into it, my uncle has an old open bike, Maico 500cc, and it's to fun, but just hard to handle. It's around 20 years old now but has been redone, now I want a bike so we can ride together. My question is that I want a bike that will make be a better rider, after reading on this forum it seems that the 4 strokes make you lazy because of the extra hp. I want a bike that will fit me, and will continue to be enough power for years to come
thanx

Get a 450f or a 250 two stroke. You are pretty big. I am 20 years old, 6', 150 pounds and ride a 426 with no problem. I like the low end and overall power and grunt from the 4 stroke. I have ridden 2 strokes and I don't like how it is all of nothing for power.

i don't know enough about two strokes but i'd say a 250 2stroke...i think they're more powerful than 4 so it may be better but not so powerful as a 500...

not sure though

don't let forums get confusing and remember, in large part they're opinions rather fact. Fact: 4F's don't make a rider lazy any rider can do this on his own regardless of technology. Fact: it's not the extra hp, it's the available hp thru the entire band (that's what makes them an ideal choice for beginner riders, much safer) Fact: big guy's and 4F's are a good combination, less feathering and you don't have to be in the band all the time. Fact (maybe opinion) Never, ever buy a used 250F, 450F's would be a consideration. Used 2stk's are a buyers market, the technology has been around as long as I, take what you save and consider flywheel weights for trail and tooling in the woods, they remove easy enough should you want to go mx. I'm hitting my winter weight 235, and the old wore out KX250 serves me well (mx). I ride my sons fresh yz250 and I have panic attacks. I did like riding his 250F... pulled my weight well... downside is I can rebuild 2stks, the 250F became a nightmare... topic for another post. Have fun riding with your uncle... pains me to say this but the 450F may be the wiser choice.

Thanks for the help, it's between a 250 2stk or a 450, Im not going to be extremely serious in riding, it's more of a going out and having fun, and not having to worry about maintenance that is tough and expensive. We will see but seeing that I like in Upstate NY and I will see white on the ground for the next 4 months Ill keep my eyes and ears open to help me make a decision.

what makes you say that (I'm trying to sell an 06 250F and wondering what I'm up against; I haven't had much interest)?

250 two stroke has power and alot easier and cheaper to run. i dont have much probs in open class in the holeshot, but i weigh 165 also.

I would always go with the two-stroke. I love the feel of the "whip" that you get when there's a slight twist of the throttle, and that feel of a two-strokes powerband.

I'm 19, 6', and just under 140 lbs and the CR250 is perfect.

I just bought 2001 YZ125 for my 14yr old son and a YZ250f for myself. I swap back and forth between both bikes and I can't tell which I like better. I'm 54 and go 225 both bikes can scare the s.... outta me. I guess I'm just old. I'm leaning towards the 125 though just cause it eazy to through around in the woods. It's geared 13 front 52rear. Makes a difference. On the otherhand at the end of the day my son is tired from working the clutch and throttle and with 250F I can lug through lots of stuff in 2nd and just ride the bike.

when you said you go 225, i hope you dont wind these bikes to that speed ;) . youre comparing a bike that is 2 years older and youre a little on the crusty side ;) , so it sounds pretty cool to hear someone compare these 2 bikes and prefer the 125. BTW: some may agrue, but i think that a 250 2T are closer to a 450, then a 125 to a 250F.
