TRIS said:i would choose ktm personally, however between cr and yz, choose yz. they are lovely machines. the cr's especially the cr125 are dreadfully underpowered 2 strokes. also 250 and 125 will last about the same time, depends what kind of power you want.
kdxdaniel said:thanks fellas but I think I am going for 1999-2002 in that price range. 250cc and put a flywheel weight on it for woods. I am kind of leaning toward YZ. I hear that KTMs can be expensive since there are few after market parts around.
thanks

kawicam250 said:let me start by saying, Kawasaki's can be just as reliable, if not more reliable as a Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, or KTM with the proper maintenance and replacements done. all of the big 5 are reliable brands, they just get a bad rap when they get into the wrong hands.i own a 2000 KX125 that has plenty of power for MX or trails. if you want a 250 for the woods, id go for either the KX or YZ250 2-stroke, solely because they have a lot of low-end, which is what you want in the woods, a KX will have more low-end, whereas a YZ will be more spread out. all trails are different, so it depends on how high in the RPMs you'll be most of the time back there  . a YZ125 or a KTM wouldnt be ideal for woods, because the YZ125 is the tallest stock dirt bike you can buy :yikes: , and the 125SX is the fastest 125 out there, its not geared for trials. IMHO, if you want a 250 smoker: KX or YZ. if you want a 125 smoker: KX, RM, or possibly CR( like stated earlier, Honda's 2 smokes, especially the year models youre looking at, didnt know how to make a smoker, but their 125 was worse than their 250 compared to the other brands. i rode a 2000 CR125 on a couple of trails about 4 months ago, it felt top heavy, there wasnt much power anywhere, it was just plain bad :coocoo: .) anyways, id go to cycletrader.com or evilbay to find some great deals on any of these bikes. :ride:
