I have had the ole XRs 250 and KDX 200 and want to get a new bike about a 2000 model i woods and trail ride and am 160 lb 35 and 5 10' question will a 250 last longer than 125 ? piston wize What is the easier to maintain and change out pistons? YZ or CR I want to stay away from KX because of KIPS valve and thin sleeves. What has the better reputaion for reliablity?
Thanks for any info....

i would choose ktm personally, however between cr and yz, choose yz. they are lovely machines. the cr's especially the cr125 are dreadfully underpowered 2 strokes. also 250 and 125 will last about the same time, depends what kind of power you want.

with normal maitenance a two stroke will last a good amount of time. from what ive been reading the same goes for 4 strokes but if you dont keep up with maitenance the 4 stroke will cost more than the 2 stroke in repairs.

What CR's are you talkin' about? The 2001 had one of the best 250 engines out there. Honda is also very well known for quality and great suspension. He is looking at getting an older model around 2000. If he said that he wanted to get a 2006 then I would say that the YZ would be the one to get. In 1999-2001...both are great 250's.

thanks fellas but I think I am going for 1999-2002 in that price range. 250cc and put a flywheel weight on it for woods. I am kind of leaning toward YZ. I hear that KTMs can be expensive since there are few after market parts around.
thanks

let me start by saying, Kawasaki's can be just as reliable, if not more reliable as a Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, or KTM with the proper maintenance and replacements done. all of the big 5 are reliable brands, they just get a bad rap when they get into the wrong hands.i own a 2000 KX125 that has plenty of power for MX or trails. if you want a 250 for the woods, id go for either the KX or YZ250 2-stroke, solely because they have a lot of low-end, which is what you want in the woods, a KX will have more low-end, whereas a YZ will be more spread out. all trails are different, so it depends on how high in the RPMs you'll be most of the time back there  . a YZ125 or a KTM wouldnt be ideal for woods, because the YZ125 is the tallest stock dirt bike you can buy :yikes: , and the 125SX is the fastest 125 out there, its not geared for trials. IMHO, if you want a 250 smoker: KX or YZ. if you want a 125 smoker: KX, RM, or possibly CR( like stated earlier, Honda's 2 smokes, especially the year models youre looking at, didnt know how to make a smoker, but their 125 was worse than their 250 compared to the other brands. i rode a 2000 CR125 on a couple of trails about 4 months ago, it felt top heavy, there wasnt much power anywhere, it was just plain bad :coocoo: .) anyways, id go to cycletrader.com or evilbay to find some great deals on any of these bikes. :ride:

isn't yz more of a race bike? i know the WR 250s or 450s are nice

if not i say a yz250F...won't have so much power as a two stroke for trail riding

if he's just looking to ride trails, then a YZ250F or any 250F would not be the ideal choice for him. a 2T works fine on trails, again if he wants a 250, id go for a KX or YZ250.

Why are you looking at a motocross bike?

Get a GasGas DE250. I will personally guarantee that you will love it.
