The XL is a full on dual sport, the XR was the MX race bike. Not sure what differences if any there was between the engines. I can't even imagine how many hours we put on our 77 XR75 but it was substantial, pretty sure we even changed the oil once and cleaned the filter . I look back at it now and look at the maintenance we do on our current bikes and think it's a miracle that bike even ran.
