Good question

Funny you ask ...Mine just started making noises as well. The last ride I went on I noticed it. Does your noise/noises get louder and more pronounced at idle? Mine seems to ...or maybe I can just hear it better.

I think it might have a manual CC tensioner and hopefully can be tightened if need be.

ANYONE KNOW?

The XR600 has an automatic cam chain tensioner. So, when the chain starts making noise, its time for a new one.

Most likely the cam chain. Also check the tensioner pin, and assembly. Pay attention to the guides and sprockets also. Odds are you'll get away with a cam chain. As for how hard, if you have reasonable mechanical aptitude, some decent tools and a Honda shop manual you should be ok.
