2000 CR125 6 speed box

Hi

I was wondering if anybodys put a six speed box in there CR125

My CR is hardly ridden since new and I was comparing my dyno charts to 2001 and 2002 CR's and its a really strong motor.And my suspension is set up perfect for me so I thought I may just put a six speed box init instead of buying a new one.Any body any thoughts on this? (I do the odd cross country race so thought the extra gear would be handy)

You can buy all the individual parts from the 1997 model, I believe that was the last year of the 6-speed. You can't just buy an extra gear, the tranny is completely different with regards to the spacing and shift drum. Figure on spending about $1000 to do the conversion.

I have a friend in the business and he has quoted $1500 AUD (about $750 US)

What I was wondering, is was it worth it?

The Cr six speed wasnt that reliable as thats the real reason they went to a 5 speed so choose wisely.

6 speed

i also race shifter karts, and we have been running cr125's. Honda still makes a cr125 with a 6speed tranny, destined for karting use. Not sure however about the cost of the tranny upgrade, but there are newer model cr125 motors with the extra gear.

I cant remember ever seeing a pre 1997 CR125 on the side of the track because of a blown trans.

I can only say i know of more than a few that have broke 1st gear as its part of the shaft(instead of a separate grear) and some that have broke the output shaft at the sproket-the shaft shears off and you are left with a sprocket in your hand with a bit of shaft attached-not cheap the shaft alone comes to over $100 and with some gears and bearings we are talking alot of money.I had a 93 Cr125 which was stolen and only a few months old and when i stipped the engine after it was recovered more than 1 gear was badly chipped-i dont think it was the thieves as they hardly rode it as they ran it on neat petrol and it didnt go far:mad:

Its not a widespread problem and Honda generally would warranty them if they wernt morew than 6 months old but it was a big enough problem IMO to change it to a 5 speed-not many riders liked the 5 speed and yet they havnt gone back.

I raced a 92 CR125 for 5 years, it was a real quick one and never had a gearbox prob once.

It was still quick against 97 125's I also had an Ohlins shock and Marzochi Forks on it.

Unfortunately in 97 just about everything else about the bike died, but I had a great run till then.

When I get a really quick bike I'm always reluctant to sell them hence the 6 speed gearbox question as the 5 speed is the only thing I dont like about the bike.

And its $3500 AUD cheaper than getting a TM125 with Ohlins forks.

Check the classified adds in Cycle News, for a long time there was a add in there that was selling new cr125 engines with 6 speed trannys.

Capt. Hookleg, you're referring to Williamson Honda. Honda makes available kit engines. In other words you can order an engine by individual parts and specify a mixture of the best performaing Honda parts from various years. Thats what the shifter kart guys do. I thin that price of $1600 is unassembled. Last year I assembled a CR80 kit motor and thought I'd go blind looking at parts drawings on Service Honda's site while trying to match all these parts in order. I never liked puzzles as a kid anyways:scream:
