Hello all, happy newyear! Just a quick note to see if anybody can give me a tip or two on what to do to make my stock 2001 RM 250 come to life a little more. Any advice will do, I am starting with a new pipe and silencer but I need help with engine related mods. Thanks all.......

The best thing I did for my bike was to have Eric Gorr do the Mo Power Everywhere port job. It gave me more low end as well as plenty of overrev (that the stock motor just doesn't have any of). I also added V Force reeds for better throttle response. The port job was cheaper than a new pipe and way more effective. I wouldn't waste any money on a pipe and silencer, just get the port job. I still use the stock gearing and no flywheel weight and I have no problem lugging around tight trails.

The next best improvement is to get the front forks revalved. They have some midstroke harshness that I could never tune out. MX Tech did a great job on doing mine.

Well, if you don't mind spending some money then get V force Delta 3 reeds (and reedcage, the package or w/e) Then a port and polish from eric gorr would work very well. And if you get the mid to top you will have to get a new pipe and silencer (or just pipe, I dont remember) but if your still looking for more power after say, you get the Mo power everywhere port and polish then buy a pipe and silencer.

I have 01' also and have a question for RMguy. I've been thinking about pulling my cylinder to send to Eric but I have a question regarding low end. Does it have better torque for first gear stop and go's over fallen logs and such? My 01 is great when I'm moving on a singletrack but to stop the bike and try to feather the clutch over a large tree or ledge it can be a handful feathering the clutch and keeping the bike running. I know what you mean about the overrev, midrange is impressive on the 01's but falls off to nothing at the flip of a switch.

The Mo Power Everywhere definitely gives it more low end torque...as well as tons of over-rev. You just can't get that with a pipe. I still have the stock gearing and flywheel and it lugs around nicely in the tight single track. I'm not saying that you don't have to clutch it but it is a lot better than stock. If you did find that you still need to clutch it, you can go up 1 or 2 teeth on the rear sprocket but that will affect your top end. A flywheel weight would help too but I like ti snap when I roll on the gas. I had a friend clock me with his bike on a straight fire-road at 76 mph (or maybe it was 86--either one to way too fast!) with the porting and stock gearing.

As far as MXing with the porting I'd go with it. You literally get more power everywhere so how can you beat that!! and it a nice smooth power too.

RMguy said it well......A port job ($200 by Eric Gorr) will be the single most effective mod for adding performance at a cost that is lower than a pipe and silencer.

You can get all the bolts on your bike can handle vforce, pipe/silencer, and sprockets spending double the money and you still won't have the amount of gains that can be had from a port job.
