great bike

I like mine, it has a great riding position, great mid to top, but like you said bottom is off. I put a vforce-fmf gnarly -shorty on and it brought a significant improvement in bottom but it still is weaker off the bottom than the other bikes. Lots of guys have had sucess switching to a pwk kehin airstriker carb. www.carbpartswarehouse.com  and have reported better bottom by far. Others have done the porting from eric gorr, never heard a single complaint, must be good stuff. I have plans to send out my jug soon. One thing I can steer you away from is the icat. useless paperweight. By contrast I just bought an 04 rm 250 the build quality is weak compared to honda but the bottom pulls super-hard. I will have to see if I can get used to the riding position if not Ill stick with the honda for a while. Its just a very comfortable bike with great handling.

If you're picking a bike between those two years, I'd say get the '03. Eric told me the '03 has the best cylinder of all the '02 - '04 CR250's.

if you want bottom, buy something else. i bought mine for the sole reason of having/wanting a top-end motor.

If you're considering 02' to 04' CR250's get an 03'..The 03' motor is more powerful stock and it's what most of the tuners agree is best for modification...My buddies 04' CR250 is modded by Varner and he went with his advice and bought an extra 03' cylinder for mods....It's a monster.

Id vote for the 03, someone elses suspension mod (the 02)may not suit you. The honda stock pipe is weak on bottom and great everywhere else, if your planning on getting the porting it may all work out, then you can add any of the other mods later down the road when or if you find a trait in the bike you dislike. Itll be worth a little more resale as well.

The '03 is a great bike, just pitch the stock exhaust as far as you can and get a Pro Circuit Works pipe/Shorty silencer, NICE improvement all over and mid/top is fantastic. All the sources I respect most seem to agree the GForce V3 is the best setup for improving low end (other than porting), that's next on my list. I may still port it as well. The bike is just so well made and the handling is excellent, it's worth it to me to invest some.
