I'm moving my son from a TTR 90 to some 85cc bike mainly because all he wants to do is jump and suspension would be nice. We mainly ride motocross tracks and he has just about beaten the TTR90 to death. I was planning on a KX85 because of the easy to use powerband but I'm not so sure of its quality and reliability compared to a CR85. I noticed that for 2005 Honda did some cylinder/head/pistons changes to increase torque. Does anyone know if this gives the 05 CR85 an easy to use powerband?

Regardless of the changes unless they added a powervalve the CR and YZ will not be in the same neighborhood as the RM and KX for bottom end. We ran a KX for a couple of race seasons without issue, and the family we race with has run 3 different RM's over the past few seasons without any issues.

Cr85

My son switched to an '04 CR 85 in April. We originally intended to get a KX or RM because of the low end torque.
Junior is a cautious rider, who doesn't run pinned very much (yet). Got the CR due to parts availablity and good local dealer.
My son is EXTREMELY happy with the CR. He adapted tp power band almost instantly. Put an FMF Fatty pipe on and told him he has more low end. Just got the suspension valved (etc) for his weight/style. Best $$$ ever spent! I was quite suprised at the difference proper suspension made.

slowmorider, is there any way you can get him on one before you buy it? Until the above post, I would have said no way.

An RM85 or KX85 less than reliable? Here comes the 'fit and finish' crowd, drinking out of the pond of everlasting ignorance....

Everyone's going to RM250's now (appropriately, I might add)--look out. They'll all blow.

However, some kids like to get the s... scared out of them. When I was that age--I wanted something wicked. My first ride on what I thought was acceptable was a 76RM80. In 7th grade, an RM370. So ya' never know, I guess.

We went with a KX85 since the sales person we talked to at our local Honda dealership was totally incompetent. He told me that the 2005 bikes are not released until July of 2005. Not true as I was able to find a 05 CR85 along with the KX85, RM85, and YZ85 at another dealer. With all the 85s lined up next to each other it was easy to compare. Anyway we're happy with our KX purchase.

also something to consider is a ktm 85.. they are are super fast but yet easyer to ride.. not quite as easy as a kx or a rm.. but yet easir then a cr or yz. harder hit doesnt always mean you are faster on it.. i am way way faster on my ktm then my old cr..its all about preference.. another thing is height of the bike.. the ktm is the tallest so that migth play a big factor in the decision
