How do I know the timming is spot on for this older bike?I had to replace the stator and used the old bracket which has a different mark than the bracket the stator came off of. The bike has no bottom but strong mid and upper. It idles ok,but backfires sometimes. The motor is tight(new crank, piston and rings, gaskets)Any ideas on how to check it and be sure? Thanks for all your help!

I'm not sure about the timming question but I know the early 80s RMs suffered from having no bottomend but a good mid-top power because my cousin owned a '84 and it had ZERO bottom but a screaming mid-topend.

If you have good top end (~10,000 rpm), your timing is most likely fine. When my timing is crap, the bike won't run above 5,000 or so rpm. My bike also has barely any bottom end, and screaming top end.
