98 KDX200 Kickstart won't recoil

Just rebuilt the engine, son sucked massive amounts of water through it. Had to replace both crankshaft bearings, connecting rod, big and small end bearings and pins.

Put it all together and when I try the kickstarter it will recoil if the ride side engine cover is not inplace.

Is this just the spring not being installed properly and if so, while looking at the right side, which way do you wind the spring?
