Yeh, I used to run the style 1 tire on my old XR years ago. Worked good on a thumper, but was a little heavier. They used to be marketed under the Dick Cepek name, a company famous for its off-road truck/buggy tires.
The one thing I liked about it was the fact that the sidewalls were so stiff, you could run on a flat! What I dis-liked was mounting them! I used to take them to a local bike shop, and the last one he mounted for me, he said don't ever bring him another-he won't mount it.
I don't know how they compare to todays tires, but now I prefer the Michelin M-12s'.
