Just being curious, anyone in the US Marine Corps? Currently or discharged? I am going to be in the Corp when I graduate, any personal time to go do what you want, like ride? I love riding. .

I'm a Marine in Quantico, VA. I was reservist for 5 years and now I'm active duty. I've talked with many Marines and have heard that they still ride on weekends.

When I was a reservist, I was an 0351---Antitank Assault. But, I went to college and was commissioned in August. My new MOS is aviation. I'm scheduled for flight school this summer. What are your plans with the Marines?

That is cool, I want to take my first 4 year as infantry, and if I like it as much as I am guessing I am going to go for force recon(if i make it). I dont know a whole lot about it except it is hard as heck. But im up for it.

Infantry is awesome! You'll have a good time doing it. Do you want Basic Infantry or Mortars/Machineguns/Antitank? Anything you do, you will not regret later. It will be tough, don't think differently. But, just remember thousands have gone before you. If you want recon, I think they offer Recon Indoc. either in bootcamp or infantry school. Start swimming as much as you can now. Also, run a lot too. You'll benefit greatly. Running and endurance is so important in basic...recon too. The more you run now, the less stressed you'll be in either basic or recon. I think Infantry was the best decision I ever made. Every MOS in the Marines revolves around the individual rifleman. It really gave me an understanding as to how things work at the lower levels. I'll never regret it. Be positive about every thing you do, no matter how bad it hurts or how inconsequential things seem. Everything you do or your Drill Instructors do is for a reason.

Never a Marine, but I was in the U.S. Navy from 90 to 92. If your one of those marines that gets stationed on a ship you might have to go a couple of weeks between rides. But if you do spend time on a ship, you will be able to go all over the world and ride. Most of the ports I went to had places to rent bikes.
Hawaii
Singapore
U.A.E
Austrailia
Thailand
Japan, if you get stationed here like I was, you can get new Jap bikes cheap. In 1991, you could go to the local Honda shop just outside of the base and get a New Cr 250 for less $1,200 U.S. dollars But, you'll have to pay more for gas (by the liter).
It's funny how prices are so much different from one country to another. The U.S. has some very high tariff taxes on imported goods.

Good Luck in the U.S.M.C.!

I met an enlisted Marine the other day that was stationed in Iwakuni, Japan for a year and he said that he was able to ride almost every weekend. He got to ride on Japanese National tracks too, but it was mostly woods and trails. He bought a CR250 over there too. I forgot to ask about price though. Yeah, expect to do deployments for up to six months or more (like the Marines in Afghan. now) but, you'll be presented with the opportunity to ride all over the world.

That would be great, right now I am bikeless. I live in the Upper pen. of michigan and we got snow so I couldnt ride if I had a bike. I am looking to get a bike within 4 months. But doubt it will happen..

I'm a Marine also. :) I'm a 6531 Avaition Ordnance Man :p Best of luck to you in the infantry, I'm an airwinger, so I don't go to the field as much as I would like. But I do get to play with bombs and missiles on the Harrier. :) And I'm stationed right next to Glames. :)

Former Marine here......or as I like to think, once a Marine, always a Marine.
5 years active duty from 87 to 92 and played in the reserves until 2001. Nothing against you grunts, but I had a blast in the airwing. Some things I miss greatly, otherthings..........well, i'm just glad I wasn't active duty during the Clinton administration. It always seems it isn't like it was in "the old days"

OHHRAH!!! SEMPRE FI!!

I hope to avoid the Harrier (Yard Dart). But, in all reality I'll fly anything they put me in. The JSF is lookin' pretty sweet though! And you know as well as I that the military, Marines in particular, can't build any vehicle without putting a weapon on it! :p
So when that Osprey becomes an attack aircraft, be sure I'll have my name in the pot to fly it!

True they do look nice, but can be a nightmare to work on
jboomer: The best pilots fly the Harrier, that would be the one I'd go for :)

Why are they the best Kav? Besides being Marines, and your undisputed devotion to "unit integrity," why do you feel this way? Is there a specific reason or should I be motivated by your dedication?

I'm not challenging you, I'm interested!

Re: Osprey

Boomer-Man, that Osprey scares me. That thing was in the works when I was just a pup back in '83. That thing scares me. I'm glad I didn't have to fly in it. It is one of those projects that they are just continuing to dump cubic dollars into with little success. Makes me wonder sometimes. Of course, there's a DRZ400 out there somewhere that got the same treatment from me!

Sorry to get off the subject, but I have to disagree with you about the OSPREY. I have been involved with the program for 2 1/2 years, and have flown on it quite a few times. The technology is sound, the first mishap in Arizona was caused by pilot error, who entered into a flight regime that had not yet been encountered. The second was caused by a software conflict.
There is nothing even close to what the OSPREY can do for the MARINES.
Believe me , your tax dollars are not being wasted on this program.
(off-soap box, sorry)

Thanks for the encouragement. I know that a lot of the technology is new and we have a lot to learn. I also know that when things are straightened out that is going to be an incredible aircraft. What do you do with the program?

Where is 204? I thought there was something just up the river from Quantico with Osprey's?
