I'm kicking around the idea of studding up a couple tires to play around on my fathers pond. It's about 3/4 of an acre and shaped like a kidney. I think it would be big enough to have some fun on if I could get someone to ride with me.
What I remember of actually riding on ice with sheet metal screws, you have to dig lines for turning before it starts getting cool. Now going out on a smooth field, about 8 inches of snow on frozen ground is way cool! Any gear, whip it sideways and blast the throttle. Speedway 101. There was a time, and closed golf course, that it was feasible to chase down rabbits on top of the snow. Wear them out till they can run no more. No animals were actually hurt that time! Oh, and most important, they sell cheap tires already done up. Man does that suck putting all them screws in, like watching paint dry!!
It's been alot of years since I did some good snow riding. I preferred about 4 inches. REALLY cold temps make for some sweet powder you can shred like crazy. I figured we would snow blow the ice so the snow didn't slow you down or keep you from sliding the bike around as easy. I was interested in how much traction you can get with knobbies and screws. Is it still pretty slick? How hard is it on the ice? It would suck if the corners end up wearing too thin. I guess we could just dump some water in there if it does. I can't imagine it wouldn't be worth the minimal expense to give it a shot, huh?
What else are you going to do? Its winter. They have a rubber class at the ice races. Even with the screws its pretty slick till you get the ice dug a little. If you can park your truck on the ice, you do not have to worry about digging through! Now them spikes look interesting?
If that last one is not enough I'd direct you to a guy on TT who lives "near" here- he does this. Not sure his name on TT. But his email is Motoxnutt @ G mail. com. (I think.) He's club president or treasurer or something of a club up here. I can dig it up if that one is a dead end. DRN's BlondeBomber and her clan do ice racing in WI as well, but I do not think she posts here anymore. You can find her on club57 though, I believe. I hear she's pretty good at it. A natural flattracker sort.
Cool! Thanks for the links. I had seen the Fredette site, but must not have gone back far enough in my search to see the Trellborg article. I'm gonna try to do it this winter, if I do I'll surely post about it.
