I don't think you're crazy to keep riding.

My Dad has 1 herniated, and 1 degenerative disc. He says it hurts all the time. He's not the type to stop living life because his back hurts though, which i'm glad he has that mentality.

He's 48 and still passes me on the trails.

I just had a portion of my herniated disc removed surgically (five weeks ago) and I feel great!

My nuerosurgeon said that I will be able to resume racing enduros in six months but I suspect it will be much sooner since I am already walking six miles a day, doing all weight traing except squates and dead lifts and also doing Tai Chi.

I was practicing back in early October and each time I came home my back was killing me. My reular DR said to wait a couple weeks but after one week I would feel OK so I hit the trails again only to make it worse. The last straw was after I tried to play a round of golf. Got eight holes in and had to rush home.

I had sciatic pain so bad that every time I stood up my butt, thigh, knee and ankle would feel like they were in a vise (left side only).

After an MRI I learned that I had a severly ruptured L-5. I was in surgery within three days. When I woke up in the recovery room two hours later, I was pain free and came home the same day. Operation at 7 am and home by noon.

Mild to no pain when riding, here. Best to use legs for standing as much as possible and pinch seat/tank with knees; minimize sitting - can ride for much longer this way.

Can't stand at work or home for long periods. Used to use work/kidney belts for lifting anything more than 20#, but gave up on those when read they limit back muscles developement (true?). Best to use wise, though-out lifting methods - mostly leg muscles and minimum bending.

First injured lower back many moons ago (18 YO); hurt lower back on farm + playing HS football - bottom of fumble mountain, but held on to ball! Not worth it. Am sure Drs are better these days - he couldn't do much for me then.

Last weekend I picked up my 250 onto bike stand to lube chain (pre Ballinger ride); felt pain in middle back - dang! injured even before riding! I either should use my lift stand or trade for a lighter ride. Original mid back injury was ~10 years ago, moving construction materials.

Back Injury

I have had 2 surgeries on my low back. Ruptured L4-5 and Herniated L5-S1. Still have 2 other herniated. I'm looking for a GOOD back support belt. I've found several brands and am looking for some input. Any help would be appreciated.

I jacked my back when someone hit me on my street bike. After a long day Im hurting pretty good. But strenghting my abs with situps has helped more than anything. This wasnt one of my phsycal therapy assigned movements, but I just decided to do it and my pain has drastically been reduced after riding.

I have a herniated L4-L5 I've had for about five years. They wanted to do laminectomy (cut away herniated portion and stitch disk), but I declined at the time. Most of the radicular pain down into the right leg has went away, but the back still hurts a lot. I ride whenever I can, and my back is usually a little stiff and painful for a day or two afterward. But it only bothers me while riding on really bumpy sections or after a spill. My forearms and hands wear out before my back does.
I think proper positioning (standing in certain areas) helps and a back brace might be a good idea. At some point these problems normally do heal on their own to a certain extent. If it ever really flares up again I might actually consider the surgery. I see a lot of back surgeries in my line of work with greatly mixed results.

I have @ herniated disks in my back and I find that riding makes the back muscles stronger and makes my back feel better. just go easy. I have seen many many problems with surgery on backs. If you can function day to day with some pain, deal with it only do surgery if you cant walk or cant function at all. I have seen 2 great friends that could function day to day but had pain got surgery and now they are almost parralized. CAUTION.
Strong muscles protect the back and make it feel better.
Ride safe

back problems

I have 2 herniated discs and also moderate to severe osteo arithritis. I do a lot of stretching, that helps my arithritis. I always take 3 advil before I ride, it helps a lot. I definitely pay the price the next day but it's all worth it just to ride! I just was kneedboarding and waterskiing the other day for the first time since I was diagnosed with all this back trouble, I couldn't even walk the next day. I hate getting old!

I recently thru my back out starting a chain saw. I do it about 2 times a year. Can't spell the technical name, sacrailiac. This has been about the 2nd worst time for recovery. Going on 4 weeks, 5 trips to the chiropractor and the MD for muscle relaxors.

I just got the EVS BB1 . It's by far the best belt I've tried. I had the Fox Hybrid and an Oneal belt previously. The EVS offers much more support than the other two, seems super sturdy, and has a great velcro system.
