so im lookin at this 1983 yamaha. ive been lookin at it for a while and when i told the guy to start it up the starter acted like it wasnt catching. it would turn over once or twice then sould like it was spinning unrestricted as if it had slipped off the flywheel. then when he let of the push button starter you could here the starter wind down and then make a few metal scraping noises as it came to a halt. is this just a stripped starter cog or a stripped flywheel lol or both. is it costly to repair??? thanks

Sounds like the starter motor is knackered, probably the solenoid failing to engage the main starter cog into the flywheel...

Assume that it will need a new starter. Try to find one, see how much it will cost. Decide if the bike is worth it.
