My son is 13 and rides in two different motocross classes. We've been unlucky the last few races and have had his motos very close together. Once, there was just one other moto in between. What is the best food or drink to muck down when a rider is really short on time to provide quick energy and body/muscle refreshment?

Thanks,

Cytomax is what I use. You can buy it at GNC or Smoothie King and mix it yourself. It's like gatorade but without the sugar and still tastes decent. The other thing I do is eat a small amount of fruit, half a banana or half an apple.

I ate banana chips and beef jerky today between practice sessions. Seemed to work pretty well.

Chocolate bars. You might think I joking but as long as he is eating right otherwise and is not a diabetic, candy bars are the ultimate "quick" energy source. It's what I've been doing for years and everyone thinks I'm crazy, but it works.

If it's hot, add something salty. Salt tablets -- Even Cambell's chicken broth will work well.

My suggestion is to NOT eat/drink anything that you are not accustomed to!

The sports drinks and energy bars can provide you with the essentials that your body needs, but if your stomach is not used to it you can end up with cramps or nausea.

Energy is stored by the complex carbs you eat hours before excercise. I like oranges during excercise because they have the simple sugars for burst energy and provide fluids without making you feel full or heavy.

For drink, Gatorade is a great option, has electrolytes to help your body absorb/retain the hydration, unlike water. Plus it tastes good, is inexpensive, proven to work, safe, and available anywhere.

For a quick snack, I usually do a granola bar, pretzels, fruit (banana, apple, orange, grapes), trail mix, dry cereal, animal crackers, etc. Something light, and with some carbs.

The jerky thing ... be careful eating protiens and or hard to digest stuff, body has to put energy into it.

lol, poor Rob can't buy a break anywhere.

I've had had the best luck with fruit, apple slices or grapes. A few times I've even had a protein bar. My son got hurt riding once and the Dr who examined his xrays happened to have worked with Chad Reed. She suggested including protein in small amounts to help recharge muscles. I thought the same as you Okie, that this may not be a good idea but after trying it, it seems to work well. Now if I just had time to grill a 20oz steak between motos, maybe my 2nd race would go better.

DAMN the science changing every other day. For quick energy (although not long lasting, but long enough for a moto), it was carbs. Now protein? I think I'll stick with the common belief for now, hell, they'll change it in another 6 months anyway.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned metabolic types yet? Foods affect different people in different ways... so what you eat could make you ride worse

There's no point giving a person who metabolises carbs/sugar (all carbs break down to sugars) quickly between races because they'll burn em up in no time and will fall flat and lose concentration very quickly?! The last thing you want while you're riding!

Luckily because you only want a burst of energy for about 40 mins, you can probably eat just about any simple sugar - cake, chocolate, fruit, gatorade, redbull... nutbars etc anything, but if you want to ride an enduro - well then, that needs abot more thought.

Remember too, a lot of packaged foods have additives and chemicals that your liver and kidneys have to filter out which puts a strain on the body too... better to eat clean so you can put everything into riding :ride:

I agree with the Okiewan Kenobi dude, protein's not ideal as an energy source between moto's. BUT fat and oils can be awesome! again, depending on who's eating it!

I would however get folks eating protein after the ride to rebuild worn out muscles.

Carb types can go with fruit, muffins and even chocolate because they process sugars reasonably slowly...

Protein types need fat and oils - avocado, nuts, cheese or even a little salami. Anything a little fatty...

Aaaah crap, now I'm just waffling... mmmmm waffles... Sorry fellas, this is a deep subject that needs more than just a little explanation! Check out...

One of my clients is a top level MTB racer here in NZ and we've changed him from eating pasta before a race to salami, avocado and nuts and his average speed is up 5 kmh over a race.... that's actually big news at his level!, and all we did was got him eating for his metabolic type.... easy. :)
