Black Carbon Buildup in exhaust Pipe

Last Night I pulled off my Exhaust pipe. I couldn't believe how much black carbon "stuff" had built up, especially near engine area (manifold). How often should one clean the pipe? What does one clean the crusty/hard build up with? I would think the 1/4 inch build up would affect my 1994 KDX 200 performance.

1/4 " carbon!! Go to http://justkdx.dirtrider.net , then click on "tech tips", then on "Speciality tools" and I believe the guru's inform you how to make a pipe cleaner. Ive never used one, has anyone made this tool and has it been effective?? -- AB
