broken killswitch

Hey guys, although I don't think it's repairable, I'm gonna try to fix my kill switch. If it doesn't work, I'll just replace it, but in the mean time whats a safe an effective way to stop my engine on my '95 yz80? I got the bike 2 months ago, but have had it really for only 2 weeks, because the clutch basket was getting fixed by a guy, not a shop. Now it rides like a charm.

But what is the safest way to frequently stop the engine, if there is a way? Thanks guys.

my friend had an RM80, had no kill switch. He would just stop, put it in 3rd and stall it out. never had any real problems.

i would get a new kill switch personally, but if there for some reason wasnt one available to me, just put it in first or second and pop the clutch(with no throttle of course)

i would just choke it out. i do that at the end of every riding day for easy starting next time i ride.

stuman, not sure I understand exactly what you mean. How can you pop the clutch with no throttle? And sixds, do you mean actually using the choke, or just turning off the gas flow?

choke it, it kind of primes the cylinder for the next time you start it.

I feel extremely inexperienced,I am, and I'm really sorry.But again, is this means of using my choke or turning off gas flow? I'm sorry man, just wanna do it the right way

pull the choke knob on the carburetor.

I believe the kill switch is a safety device...it's best to let the bike sit until you are able to buy a new one and wire it in. You may have never needed it, but when you do you will be glad it's there.

The kill switch is the button that shuts off the engine. Simple and easy. Its not really a safety device.. because if you wreck it wont automatically com on. You can just pull the choke lever up and it will basically over fuel the engine making it shut off. Or you can stop put it in gear and at idle you can let out the clutch slowly till it dies. Or let it out fast and it will jump and die. Or you can hold the back brake tightly and just let it out fast and it will just die. Any way will work. You can do whichever one you want. whatever is easier for you.

Well, never though of that sixds. But i know when i throttle got stuck open mine didn't work,i had to jam on the rear brake stop and stall it out. That 10-15 sec seems like forever. and it was scary, i though i was gonna blow the motor up. never really figured out what did it either.

Can't seem to find this procedure in my manual anywhere.

I dont think its going to be in your manual. If your manual tells you any way to shut off your engine then do it. But mine says nothing about shutting it off.

These are the ways i know of shutting the engine off. They work, trust me. the bast way i know of and how i would do it if i didnt have a killswitch.

Oh believe me guys, I fully plan on replacing it as soon as possible, although I like pulling the bike out and running the engine for a little, just makes me feel a little bit better, maybe trying to compensate for the seat time I haven't had yet, lol. So for the times I do that, I was looking for an easy solution to stopping the engine safely. I appreciate everyone's contributions to the thread.

You know how you stall the engine when you try to take off and don't give it enough gas?

Just do that on purpose. Hold the brake, leave the engine at idle, let the clutch out. Engine dies.

A new kill switch is about $16. I highly recommend keeping up with the simple stuff because if you don't then after a few years of such non-maintenance your bike can be past the point of no return.

I've been stuck in 2nd gear WO and the kill switch did NOTHING. I smacked a tree with my thumb on the button. The tree was more of a safety device.

If that happened the kill switch would have little to no effect in time to do anything.

I have seen bikes stuck wide open and the kill switch did nothing.

When that happens and you are moving you have to stop on the rear brake and hope you can stall the engine by causing enough drag. Or you could pull in the clutch and let the engine blow :)

It is rare that it happens but I have seen it happen.

Still... I would get a new kill switch.

i was riding yesterday.. It was about 19 degrees outside.. i was riding and having fun sliding in the snow.. and the bike started to act weird... so i went to put it away, a final burnout before i pulled her into the shed.. well, when i let off the gas it didn't do anything.. still revving.. pulled in the clutch tried to press the kill switch did NOTHING. pulled the choke did nothing.. so after freaking out for about 2.5 sec i finally let off the clutch with the back break held in.. and that did the trick. THANK GOD! about 7sec of about 3/4 throttle stuck open.. it was scary.. i thought the engine was toast for sure. But it wasn't.. and thats a good thing. My heart was racing after that. i kicked the bike and left.
