A lot really. The pipe on a 2 stroke motor is specifically tuned to help push the extra fuel thats dumped out with the waste back into the combustion chamber. Getting it right is probalby pretty tricking without some computer simulation. If you search the web, you can find some info about it. Actually, as I remember now, I found an article somewhere on the JustKDX site the was a good explanation on the principals of the expansion chamber. Might be worth a look. Basically, you going to need to know how long the head pipe should be then where to start the divergent section, how long and how quickly tapered it needs to be, how long the wide section needs to be, and how tapered and long the convergent section needs to be.
bore and stroke rod length
exh port timing trans port timing
carb dia
exhaust port dia and length from piston to pipe spigot(port length)
rpm for horsepower peak, type of power band wide or narrow
dia of silencer to be used
#of stages for diff cone and baffle cone (pipe builder might have own specific # for ease of fabrication and fitment to bike)
