Burnt valves!

After driving my truck around for months with this ticking noise I finnaly tore it down. I just got one head off, and found 1 burnt valve and 3 dead valve seats. Im pissed! now I have to either have these heads fixed at the machine shop or take a chance with a set of used heads. And I havent even got the other head off yet! not to mention I have to pull the oil pan and replace the gasket, oh and the clutch is dieing, plus the cam might have a flat lobe. I think I should just take the motor out, what fun!!! Maybe I will just take it down to the river and push it in :think: any body want a 1975 Ford F-250 4x4 with nice paint, nice interior and a POS motor? come get it and you can have it for $1.

Wow, nobody wants a $1 truck? there is a picture in my gallery. Heres a little update, Rebuilt heads from a parts store anywhere from $150-200. Thats what the truck had, and they are junk, it has all different valves in each head and they arent even a matching set! A friend of mine has a set of heads off of one of his old mustangs that he used to race, and they have Cobra Jet sized valves in them :aj: I picked em up for cheap and should have the thing back together sometime tonight or tommorow. Now the worst part of the whole deal is, its about 80º and sunny outside with a nice breeze and im stuck at home working when i should be out riding!

why can't you get new heads for it and not have to worry about machining or hoping the heads from th eboan yard are going to last.

BTW, I bought my Ranger from my Dad for $1 and only aloud one $1 pick up at a time. ;)

I had a set of head put back to gether for $186. but most likey you have more damage than just heads? That looks to be a really sweet truck if its not all rustly. I'd be loooking around for a strong used motor to put in it! good luck! be carefull about swapping heads. all ford heads do not work and play well togather!

the reason the valves are dead is because it didnt have hardened valve seats and of course you cant get leaded gas anymore, so it was bound to happen. I checked out the bores and you can still see the crosshatch and there is no ridge. The shortblock has about 60,000 miles on it but the heads have been on it forever. You cant get new heads for this motor anywhere (except edelbrock aluminum ones but thats some serious $$$) I dont want anymore junk rebuilt heads, and I dont want to spend lots of money, so i went with the ones from my friend. I know they are in good shape, they were working fine but he swapped motors. I looked up the casting numbers that ive got, and the old heads are off of a 69, the new ones i got are from 76 (last year for this motor) the combustion chambers are 3cc bigger, but that dont bother me none. the truck doesnt have any rust, it was undercoated a long time ago. Im going to have to raise the price to $5, its real close to running again. The motor even got steam cleaned and a fresh coat of Ford blue :aj: tommorow I will put the carb, headers, distrubutor, PS pump and oil pan back on and it will be done! maybe in time to go for a short ride too!

Elk, you just be quite, our lawnmowers B&S just had a burnt valve, so your elk isnt immune! :D

Oh, BTW its all back together and really ready to stomp some elk butt now! I only have one problem, the exhaust manifold gaskets that came with the gasket kit dont work with my headers :( It sounds super white trash with all the leaks. So as soon as I order a set of HEADER gaskets I gotta pull them damn things loose again, arggggghhh!

Dave, they do sell lead substitute in the concentrated form. 1oz per 10 gallons of gas. What motor are you running? I have all kinds of stuff laying around. Just pulled my motor(still being put together as we speak) thursday. Put a 4bbl manifold, oil pan gasket, rear main seal ect. Talk about bad luck, we stuck the engine mounts on backwards. We had it in, everything hooked up, but it looked funny. The engine is about 1.5 inches too far forward. So, while I'm at work my dad is under the truck trying to pull the engine himself. Man it sucks when you pull a no brainer:(
p.s. If I would have known I would ahve actually given you a descent amount for your truck. My fitty nine needs a 4wd buddy. Dave, send me a pm with your engine type, if you need any parts, I may have some.

Its a 390. what I need is a Comp 268h cam, aluminum intake and a 427 crank to turn it into a 410 stroker :aj: the lead substitute crap isnt worth it, it took about 80,000 miles to wear out the seats, and the new seats have hardened ones. Right now im stoked because of how well it runs, I cant remember when it ran this good! :silly:

I am looking into stroking my 360. I have been using the lead substitute for about 3 years with no burnt valves. I have another 360 block when I get some parts rounded, but that may be a while. In the next couple months I will be rebuilding some high comp heads and getting rid of the rv's. I think that the stockers in 75 also had the rv's. Are the new ones high compression? Let me know what the difference in power is.

360s and 390s share the same heads. From what Ive heard, over the years they changed the chambers by about 3cc, which isnt enough to do much good. If my book is right the heads I had were from a 1969, the ones I bought are from 1976. I can tell you right now you dont want to bump the compression up, its high enough if you still want to run 87 octane. the 360 motors were real dogs compared to the 390 even though they are the same other than stroke. all you need is a 390 crank rods and pistons and you will have a much better motor.
