is it safe to heat up canned goods, beans etc. in the can over the grill or fire, or is there a liner/coating on the inside of the can that makes this a health risk?

years ago my neighbors were tipping a few while BBQ'n and blew the lid off their Coleman appprox 50' high and landed on one of the fellas head......soon after the ambulance showed up :yikes:
