Just grind the posts down on the link you want to remove and then you can just use a small punch to knock the dog bone looking piece off the posts and magic you have a shorter chain. You can also buy a link tool but man that takes for ever and is a pain in the butt. I have this such tool and use the grinder first then use the link tool to remove the plate from the posts.
