my mom wants to get charter pipeline and we cant figure out how to get it or how much it cost so could someone explane to me what to do. we already checked for availability and we can get it but what i am not sure about is will we still have to keep america online and pay for both or will we just get the charter pipeline one. i am really confused so please help

Charter Pipeline will be your internet connection, just as a telephone line is now. It is not the same as having to connect to an ISP over a phone line. You will be able to choose any homepage you want for your browser to open up to, but you will always be connected to the net anytime the PC is turned on, unlike the dial-up you are used to. If you still want to have AOL for some (unfathomable to me) reason, they offer a package for people with broadband connections for around $9.95 a month (in addition to the $39.95 you will pay for the cable modem) I believe, that will allow you to connect to your AOL account with the cable connection. This is not neccessary with the cable, but it will allow you to keep your AOL address book and whatever else you use AOL for.

A word of advice: with broadband, your PC is connected to the internet whenever it is turned on, so a firewall is a must-have if you don't want to get hacked. You can download free software firewalls such as Zone Alarm, or get a hardware firewall.

Make the switch! Once you experience the speed of cable, you will never go back to a dial-up connection again.:) Changing from one website to another is almost as fast as changing channels on the TV. You will be able to do things on the net that you were never able to do on a phone line, like streaming video that doesn't look like a series of still shots being flicked quickly.

so it will cost 39.95 a month and can i still use the telophone and tv when i am online . thank you for the information my mom decided we are going to get it so thanks again

how much faster does stuff download like how many kb is your average and how do i watch tv online?

I had been wanting to go broadband at home for some time (work had me spoiled) but Charter Pipeline was my only choice. I had friends that had nothing but trouble with their lines (modem down a good portion of the time) so I didn't order it. Two weeks ago Charter called and offered me free installation and 1.5 months of free use so I decided to check it out. So far so good. Rapid transfer rates (not quite what I have at work) and so far the cable modem has only been down for about 6 hrs in a little over a week. If it keeps this up I'll probably renew my subscription.

Download speeds are around 60-70 KB/sec.

Lemming, as a level 2 tech support agent for a large cable internet company, i believe you should expect higher than 60-70KB/s download speeds. In most cases slow download speeds are caused by too high/low transmit power in your cable lines. I've seen cable connections with download speeds as high as 375KB/s.

60-70 is just barely above the bare minimum of what it should get.

As for the firewall, that's definitely a good idea, or you could just unplug your ethernet cable from the modem or computer when you don't need the connection.

My typical speeds range between 320-340 KBps, but they have gone as high as 500-600 during low-use times, particularly late at night. My service has only gone down three or four times in four years.

The online TV was a joke about getting your internet from your TV cable service, padrutt199...;)

When Charter finally offered Pipeline in my apt complex, I looked into it. Here in B'ham, they offer three "levels" of service. The top-of-the-line internet service is like $85 per month! The other levels are much slower, and still cost $45 and $65 per month.

I had Charter Cable for two months, and they are absolutely the WORST COMPANY IN THE WORLD! After much agony and frustration, I had my service disconnected and bought a DirecTV receiver and dish. Much better service, but I ain't doing the ISP with them.

Charter sucks LARGE! Just say NO!

were can i get a fire wall and how does it work like how do i use it and get it set up and julius pleaser i dont care if it sucks i just want to download stuff fast. how much does t1 or what ever cost

The speed depends on conditions of the network (other users, usage, etc.) as far as I understand it. It isn't a T1 or T3... those go much faster and cost a lot more. Typically they are services that only businesses or schools use (because of the cost). I know people with cable and DSL, at it is nice to have the internet that fast at home... I am stuck at 28.8K (only ~3K d/l speed :( ). If I wasn't spending so much money on the bike and gear I would probably have DSL (since we don't have a normal cable service).

T1 is 1,554K for a full T1 line, but fractional T1 lines can be as low as 56K. T3 is what your ISP uses to carry the bandwidth of their customers, and can carry a phenominal amount of data. T1 lines can cost as little :eek: as $360 a month or as much as $1000 a month.
