My XR70 hasn't been rode in a while.. So we cleaned out the carb, and the spark plug. Put new gas and it starts up again. Well, the problem is we can't take the choke off cause it always dies... it runs okay with the choke on. You can't throttle much gas though, or else it stalls out. Does anyone have any tips on why? btw, We let it ran for a good while to heat up.. we do live in south texas.

The pilot (low speed) jet is plugged from sitting so long. You'll need to pull the carb and clean the jets properly. The pilot jet has a very tiny hole in it that is easily plugged. A welding tip cleaner works well at clearing these small jets.

A jet is just a piece of brass with a very precise hole drilled in the center. If the hole is plugged up then gas can't pass through it into the engine, and the engine will not run properly.
