Is there any way to clean the stock silencer on a 1997 KDX220. The service manual tells you to bang it with a rubber mallet and open the drain plug. That does not really seem like a way to completely clean it.
I don't think so apart from cutting it open and then welding it back.
I had one that was almost completely plugged, very restrictive.
I tried Drano drain cleaner. It didn't work.
Any other tips. I have the same bike and i've already done the drain plug band on silencer thing. I actually had oil pour out of mine. Well it was all black lets put it that way. Maybe carbon? This was when i first got it so i probably wasn't riding it hard enough. I just did it again recently and very little black oily stuff came out.
On my '92, I used lacquer thinner. I bought a gallon and poured it in and let it soak overnight. It did a pretty good job. When you are done, be sure that you blow the fumes out with a leaf blower as lacquer thinner can be pretty explosive.
